The History of La Vignaredda

La Vignaredda, an historic house of Aggius always alive and cozy

This is a brief history of La Vignaredda. Vignaredda means “little vineyard” and our house gets its name from the ancient vineyard it faced in the past and now is home to the garden, the vegetable garden and orchard.

As many of the homes in the neighborhood, The Vignaredda dates back to 700. It was donated by her father Francesco to great-grandmother Caterina and to her husband Salvatore as a wedding gift. This large house welcomed the couple and later their 14 children. Many of the children chose a single life growing intellectual and political interests.

Among them we remember well the great-uncle Pier Felice, journalist, politician, anti-fascist, member of the Constituent Assembly who participated in the drafting of the Italian Constitution.

But the man who took care a lot of La Vignaredda was the grandfather Giovanni, who planted a large orchard which still are coming from the figs, pomegranates and plums for our jams. Here is portrayed with his wife, my grandmother Itria: beautiful, elegant and cultured was an advocate of economic independence of women.

Welcome to our home, welcome to La Vignaredda!
Cristina, great-grandson of Caterina
